Vice President for Financial Affairs and Treasurer, Luther Rice College and Seminary: 1998 to Present

Vice President of Business Affairs, Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary: 1983 to 1996

Served as Vice President for Business Affairs in one of the top 20 seminaries in the United States.  The seminary was a higher institution awarding postgraduate degrees and accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.  Also served as Director of Gift and Estate Planning.

Accomplishments at Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary:

  • Leader in SACS re-accredidation process, maintained records for both prescribed NACUBO and AICPA presentations.
  • Directed institution through severe financial downsizing of 30% during 1988-89 without loss of services or programs.
  • Assisted Coopers & Lybrand with computer analysis and supervised vendor selection and successful installation of computer hardware and software.
  • Appointed Director of Development in 1990, assisted in the creation of the development effort and implemented the seminary development program.  Over a four-year period operating revenue and capital assets doubled. Endowment funds increased four fold.
  • Instructor in Financial Management, an eight-week required financial planning course.  The course was taught three times a year.  He instructed this course for 22 semesters at Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary and for three semesters at Luther Rice Seminary.
  • Speaker for various functions and contributor of several articles to seminary publications.

 

Self employed, CPA: 1977-1983

Provided varied services to businesses, individuals and not for profit clients, including the following:

Monthly and quarterly accounting, payroll, tax services, audits, financial statement presentation, accounting system designs, both manual and computerized. Clients included both retail and wholesale businesses and professional medical and legal practices.

Burk, Quinn, Luton & Newbern, CPAs: 1973-1977

A regional accounting firm in Memphis Tennessee since 1931, providing services to businesses, not- for- profits and individuals.  Services included, auditing, taxes, accounting, management and financial planning.  Client list included Fred’s Dollar Stores, Schumacker Mortgage, various departments of City of Memphis, S & W Construction Company, Lilly Company, Bank of West Memphis, the Episcopal Diosce of Tennessee and others.

Worked for five partners on various assignments serving as in charge staff on audit engagements.  Leaving the firm in 1977 to form his own CPA practice.  This practice was later sold to Burk, Quinn Luton and Newbern (reorganized then as Knolton, Keeney and Associates) when appointed Vice President for Business Affairs at Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary.  He remained as an associate of that firm after the sale until 1996.

Luther Rice Seminary became a client in March 1997 for the CPA firm of Knolton & Hardcastle when he left his practice and appointed as Vice President of Finance in January 1998 to present.
